A precondition for attaining these aims is the creation or expansion, intensified utilization and routine application of cooperation between research and healthcare institutions. Practice relevant, networked research projects and healthcare education shall provide the following objectives:
- Development of an early recognition inventory for early detection of individuals at high risk of schizophrenia.
- Evaluation of early psychological and pharmacological treatment strategies for prevention of first episode in high- risk persons.
- Optimization of acute and long-term treatment following a first episode of schizophrenia.
- Prevention of relapse using improved predictors of reexcarbation and early intervention.
- Prevention of long-term morbidity and improvement of recovery using targeted rehabilitation programs.
- Improvement in quality of care by implementing guidelines for out- and in-patient treatment.
- Research on structural and functional brain imaging and genetic markers to investigate underlying determinants of the illness.
- Application of the results of basic research in healthcare.
- Cost-benefit analysis of innovative treatment approaches.
- Improvement in education and information of patients and relatives, as well as the public, and experts through targeted transfer of knowledge.
- Reducing stigma and discrimination.
